This cannot be overemphasized. The anti-intellectualism directed at Lacan's
work is itself psychopathological, the very antithesis of intellectual
openness, and finds it corollary in the vicious response to Freud when he
first began publishing. Ralph Alpha's particular form of vileness is
typical of that period, i.e., of the bourgeois response. It's also pertinent
to note that the central focus of psychoanalysis is repressed sexuality,
which was what pissed off the bourgeoisie off in Freud's day, and in ours.
