Hi Matt,

if I'm correct I seem to remember reading something about Adornos
inspiration from Durkheim
and Weber respectively in Gillian Rose's book 'The Melancholy Science'
where one part of the
book - approximately 25 pages I think - is dedicated to Adornos controversy
with positivism.
However, I just had to return the book to the library so I cannot check it
again.. But it might be
worth finding out if you have quick access to this classic interpretation
of Adorno.
