Press (fwd)

I'll resend my post to Jose:
If I read you right, you're asking about critical histories of newspapers
that include coverage of
advertising's role. Two books come to mind, both treating the US case:
_Discovering the News_, by Michael Schudson (Basic Books, 1978), which
examines the origins of newspaper legitimacy in the 19th century penny
press; and _Objectivity and the News_, by Dan Schiller (University of
Pennsylvania Press, 1981), which focuses more narrowly (and critically) on
the same topic.
Not quite F-school--though Habermas includes discussions of advertising,
PR, and the penny press in _Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere_
and of course there's the culture industry chapter from _Dialectic of
Enlightenment_.
Hope this helps.
