Re: List Moderation

Jukka Laari is right: one should'nt start a debate and then 'walk
away from it'. My original post to Lloyd I sent off during a journey
through Holland, when my access to the Internet was sporadic. I read
most of the exchanges after my return to Frankfurt. No slight
intended to those who responded directly to my post but did not
receive a reply.

Lloyd and I have been friends since our student days. We were both
'politicised' (an interesting word worth dwelling on at some point)
in the Anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa, in the sixties and
seventies. We hold entirely different views on Adorno and the
Kulturindustrie-debate. My original post was a kind of collegial
nudge, with the subtext: it's time to start a debate about this.
Dumain then read into my mail proof of 'european arrogance' and
academic aloofness. (One more comfortably tenured 'footnote-whore'
undermining the resolve of those prepared to 'fight the system'.)

(The request to the list owner is simple enough: place a limit to
flames, insults, irrelevant polemics. There's a point at which
liberal tolerance of dissident opinion turns into passivity in the
face of 'hate speech' tactics meant to stifle discussion.)

I'll try and respond to the substance of the Kulturindustrie-debate
in the next few days.
