The word used was 'populist'. The distinction is essential.
The art of the oppressed does usually contain an element of confirmation
of their unfreedom. When entwined with the culture industry, that
element tends to become overwhelming. Since you seem to accept that that
is what is happening now, I am unsure why you are becoming so angry. No
doubt a defender of rap music would find your own critique 'purely
arbitrary'. There are interesting discussions to be had here, but your
style of argument would ensure a descent into some internet 'flame war'.
I am not an academic by the way, though I did go to University once.
