job opportunities in Australia
Dear PKT'ers
The Economics and Politics disciplines (former Economics Department and now
officially called by the management of the University for their own reasons
- the School of Policy)
has three tenurable positions in Economics in the at Levels B,C and D,
with up to 2 commencing in July,
along with a Level B position in Politics commencing later this year were
advertised in the Australian newspaper
last Wednesday.
Australia has a five level academic structure
Level A = Associate Lecturer = Our entry level post
Level B = Lecturer = Entry level post Phd Professorship in USA
Level C = Senior Lecturer = Next level up in USA
Level D = Associate Professor (formerly called Reader) = not really a
position identifiable in USA.
Level E = Chair or Full Professor = Top Professor in USA.
To get full details of the essential criteria and the application
procedure, please refer to the University web site:
http://www.newcastle.edu.au/services/employment/vacancies.html
The closing date is May 7 for the Economics positions and May 21 for the
Politics position.
The School is heterodox with a strong bias towards Post Keynesian thinking
and analysis. It is a leading research school
in the University and places a strong emphasis on this part of our academic
activity.
The Centre of Full Employment and Equity (CofFEE), a major research centre
in the University, advocates the adoption of a Job Guarantee to cure
unemployment. The Director (Bill Mitchell) and Deputy Director (Martin
Watts) are both members of the School of Policy. Go to
http://e1.newcastle.edu.au/coffee to see CofFEE's www site.
We urge any PKT'ers who are frustrated with their career options in North
America or elsewhere who want to work
in a progressive academic department to think seriously about applying for
these positions. Newcastle is on the east
coast just north of Sydney with cheap(er) housing and excellent natural
amenities (surf, mountains, bush) close by.
The $A exchange rate is also very strong (relatively) at present and PPP is
definitely being violated in our favour!!
Please distribute this email to whomever might be interested.
best wishes
bill
