Governance in the 21st Century: Coercion, Consent, Contestation

The dramatic changes that have occurred in the world over the last quarter
century have brought terms such as "globalization" and "governance" into the
foreground of theoretical and empirical debates with the latter term often
seen as a replacement, a complement, or a challenge to the former.

The recent prominence of the term globalization highlights a rapidly
evolving debate in international political economy. Although it may be
agreed that governance is about the exercise of power, understanding why and
how decisions are made remains highly contested. For example, while many
hold that traditional understandings of power and political process remain
the most useful means of understanding governance, others insist that
factors such as culture and identity must be addressed in any meaningful
analysis.

This interdisciplinary conference will provide an opportunity to pursue
these debates and explore the dynamics of governance past, present, or
future at the individual, local, national and transnational level. Topics
may include, but are not limited to, capitalism, empire, democracy,
citizenship, human rights, gender, human security, work and welfare, and the
environment.

Abstracts (250 words or less) required by January 31, 2004. Please submit
