The best in Europe were attracted to France in those days.  In fact the
best of the world. Several Chinese Communist Party founders met each
other in France before returning to China to found the CPC.  The most
influential modern Chinese novelist Ba Jin, studied in France.  He was
widely expected to receive the Nobel Price for litereature after the
Cold War but was blocked because he is a communist.  The award went to
some anti-communist writer of little consequence instead.
