Re: What is Full Employment?
Right Henry (except nobody gets "paid out of tax revenue", but we'll put
that aside). The only way to achieve zero involuntary unemployment,
etc., is for government to offer a job to anyone willing to work for a
basic public sector wage. So then the question is what kinds of
activities constitute public service employment. I believe a strong
argument can be made that in many cases it may be better to allow
homemaking/child-raising to be a public service job rather than have the
mom or dad working at something else to pay for day care. A case can
also be made that more affordable and more adequate child care would
take care of the problem. Ideally, moms and dads would have the option.
A case may also be made that education and training programs also
constitute public service.
The point is that anything less than true full employment should be
unacceptable, and the re-definitions of "full employment" to mean
something else, where millions are involuntarily unemployed,
underemployed, etc., should be off the table.
