Professor of Economics, Columbia University

	GLOBALIZATION AND ITS DISCONTENTS

Professor Stiglitz was the co-winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economic
Science who was cited for his work on the economics of information. In
addition to his academic affiliations, he served as Chairman of the
President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisors and as Chief Economist
and Senior Vice-President of the World Bank. He has authored numerous
articles and several books including one whose title is the topic of
this lecture. His activities with the Council and the World Bank took
him to many developing countries where he experienced the challenges of
world poverty and the institutional obstacles to its alleviation. These
experiences led to his recommendation for reforming the architecture of
global economic institutions.
