Re: C-FEPS report on Economists' Statement

As one of the four hunfdred economists that signed the proclamation against
the Bus tax policy, let me say that I tend to agree with Gary M on most of
this. The fear of deficits that permeates mainstream economic theory is
overblown -- but the political climate is NOT right for the CFEPS statement.

If you want to have an impact on policy you "must no only be good (i.e.,
identifiy good policiies) you must be clever (i.e., you must have the right
packaging)." In this case, despite my differences with much of the reason that
the "10 Nobel Prize winners" used to develop this proclamation,I signed on.

The idea is tgo provide the coirrect theoretical background for radically
different policies than those accepted today. When Democratic economic
advisors argue for more fiscal responsibility we are truly living in an Alice
In Wonderland world.
