I am reluctant to get into this, but am moved to respond.

Fair enough. Point taken. It is not fair, and possibll reflects some
lingering anti=semitism. But do you support what Sharon is doing to the
Palestinians? A policy of 'Mowing the lawn' every day?

Did you see the recent piece in last week's Times by Thomas Friedman:

In 20 years the Arabs will be in a clear majority. Isreal will then have
only three choices:

1. Continue to play tough, bantustanize the west bank, etc. No democracy. No
vote for the arabs. Not very high on ethics, not justifiable, and not
terribly attractive for the long term.

2. Give the Palestinians a state in the west bank including the settlements.
Not politically feasible in Israel

3. Give the Palestinians the vote, and no longer have a democratic Jewish
state.

If these are really the only choices, surely Number 3 sounds best? Israel
becomes a democratic, multi-ethnic country, much like South Africa. True,
Israel would no longer be a Jewish state. But is this really such a tragedy?


Suppose the blacks in SA were to say, we want a purely African State. Whites
out!

How do you like them apples?

So anti-Israel diatribes have arrived on PKT, from Australia no less. I
guess this was to be expected sooner or later. As someone once said (Mary
McCarthy about Lillian Hellman?) there is not a true word in this stuff,
including "the."

But here is an interesting question: Why is the Left so obsessed with
Israel? This tiny country of six million people surrounded by the most
absurd tyrannies left on this earth? Because of this obsession they
apparently don't have enough mental energy left to be concerned about (to
pick almost at random): Sudan (a million victims in a decade long war of
repression), Sri Lanka, Kosovo, Rwanda, Turkey and the Kurds, Iraq an the
Kurds, Chechnya, Kashmir, for God's sake?
