Position for a heterodox Economist
The Labour and Workplace Studies Program, Faculty of Arts, at the
University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time
tenure-track appointment in Labour and Workplace Studies at the rank of
Assistant Professor. The appointment will begin 1
July 2003, or soon thereafter, subject to final budgetary approval. The
floor of the salary range for the Assistant Professor rank will be
$46,951. The starting salary will reflect the qualifications and
experience of the chosen candidate.
The successful candidate: (1) must be able to teach core courses in the
Program in the areas of Labour Institutions and Problems,
Political Economy of Labour, and Industrial Relations; (2) will have a
specialization in one of the following: Industrial Relations, including
Unions and Unionization / Collective Bargaining; Political Economy of
Labour and Labour Market Analysis; Labour Process and
Organization of Work; Gender, Race and Ethnicity of Work; Globalization
and Work.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. by the time of appointment and
have demonstrated success in both research and
teaching. (A 1-year term appointment at the rank of Lecturer may be
possible for a candidate near completion of his or her Ph.D. The
floor of the salary range for the Lecturer rank will be $36,472). He or
she must be prepared to develop and maintain a strong Program of
further research in the area of specialization and to teach undergraduate
courses in that area. The Program also requires
inter-disciplinary scholarship, the ability to establish links with other
departments and Programs, the ability to establish, maintain and
strengthen links with the general community, the potential to participate
actively in the evolution of the Labour and Workplace Studies
Program, and the potential to assume administrative responsibilities.
Responsibilities will also include supervision of students and
service to the Program, the Faculty of Arts and the University at large.

confidential letters of reference must be received directly from the
applicant's referees. Candidates may wish to provide evidence of
effective teaching, such as teaching evaluations and sample course outlines.
