I would like to borrow Fred's list to ask for some information. My
department is considering eliminating History of Economic Thought as a
requirement for a degree in Economics. I teach in a college of business
and they claim students don't find HET "useful" to their careers.I want to
know: how many of your programs require HET;how many economics departments
still require HET and how many do not;and, while I have my own ideas, how
others defend HET as a requirement for a degree in economics.I
view the attack on HET as an attack on heterodox economics in general.Any
information or suggestions will be deeply appreciated.

> Below is a call for participants at the Conference on the History of
Heterodox Economics in the 20th Century--I have also attached a copy of
it in case you want to post it around your department. From the range
of papers being given, the Conference should be quite exciting. Also
attached is the registration form for the Conference. In addition,
below there is information about hotels, getting to the hotels from the
airport, and getting from the hotels to Linda Hall Library, the site of
the Conference. Lastly, the web site for UMKC is http://www.umkc.edu/
and if you go to M you will find an entry for map. Also the web site
for Linda Hall Library is http://www.lindahall.org and it also has a map
plus information about the library.

> The typical picture of economics in the 20th Century is one of
continuity-pluralism-homogeneity. There is however, another history
that no one wants to talk about-a history of repression, discrimination,
and unacceptable dissent groups. This conference examines this other
history by challenging the accepted view. The theme of the conference
is that economics in the 20th Century has been a contested discipline
and there is a heterodox economics and it has a history. Come hear
papers about the forbidden world of heterodox economics and participate
in the discussion. Topics covered at the conference include:
>
> Department histories: Texas, Michigan State, New School, Oklahoma,
Manitoba, Utah
> Associational histories
> Marxism and radical economics
> Teaching heterodox economics
> Heterodox economists: Henry George, Barbara Wootton
> Heretical economics and economic policy
> Heterodox economics, pluralism, and mainstream economics
>
>
> Speakers include: David Hamilton, Allan Schmid, John King, Jean
Shackelford, Susan Feiner, Frances Hutchinson, Rob Garnett, Clark
Everling, Mathew Forstater, W. Robert Brazelton, Malcolm Rutherford,
Ronnie Phillips
