WILLIAM GREIDER

Bad for Business

"How many times can you say 'unbelievable'?" my wife asked the other
morning, . . . Or the accusation that Perot Systems,
after designing California's deregulated energy-trading system, turned
around and showed the energy companies how to blow holes in it (and
generate those soaring electric bills for Californians).
 . . .
This about Perot Systems Corp. is not quite right. It has not
been suggested that PSC was aware of defects in the software
and published those defects to prospective clients. It has not
been suggested that PSC designed specifications for an
energy-trading system. PSC apparently implemented in software
an energy-trading system for which the specifications by the
client invited or allowed gaming strategies. It's unknown by me
if PSC became aware of shortcomings in the specifications and
did point them out to the client first or whether they
attempted to peddle those shortcomings in a secretive
manner. Mr. Greider is shooting from the hip.
