GAUSS Light 3.5 (fwd)
This post will only interest those who teach economics
and want to include a programming component in a course.
I have learned from Aptech that they will supply students
with GAUSS Light 3.5 free of charge! I have been using
this in grad courses (esp. math econ) and it has been
a geat teaching tool. Compared with the full version,
there are matrix limitations
(ie.., 10,000 elements and/or 100 X 100
matrix limit, 1 mb global symbol memory,
1 1/2 mb total workspace) and no source level debugger.
This does not matter for most things, but I did have to
change a 3-D graphing assignment due to these limitations.
I have not done a comparison with the free version of
O-Matrix, which is not in such wide use among economists
but also sounds pretty good.

Alan Isaac
