Vicenc poses the question on surplus garnered from machinery:
"Does the one who organises production deserve a rate (of profit) on the
resources -both kinds of labour- employed, or is it only a thing that happens
and you have to go through it to relate these resources to prices?"
The latter--there's no question of capitalists implicitly "deserving" profit. I
still enjoy Marx's humour on this point:
"'Have I myself not worked? Have I not performed the labour of superintendence
and of overlooking the spinner? And does not this labour, too, create
value?' His overlooker and his manager try to hide their smiles."
