ICARE Educational Links: Call for Submissions

Dear ICARE Colleagues (apologies to multiple recipients),
One of my personal concerns within ICARE is that we get the word out to
young/new scholars that alternative approaches to economics exist. I am
convinced that increased publicity alone would greatly benefit our
associates, especially when it reaches economists before they have
invested a great deal into their research agendas. So many new Ph.D.'s
simply don't know that there are other methods of approaching economic
issues. To that end, I have encouraged everyone to, at the very least,
mention the ICARE web page to their students and colleagues.
However, after an e-mail exchange with Jim Angresano late last month, I
think we have hit upon a new, more concrete idea. In general, ICARE
would maintain a set of teaching-related materials, bibliographies, and
links (which would not only be of real use to our membership, but
attract "drop-in trade" that would in turn increase the visibility of
our associates). Materials would be organized under the headings of
introductory undergraduate, advanced undergraduate, and graduate.
Within each, categories would be created as necessary as materials were
submitted to me. For example, if an individual were to forward to us a
brief introduction to the Austrian approach to capital (whether this be
a link, bibliographic reference, or the materials themselves, which I
could upload to our server), I would then create an "Austrian Economics"
heading under the level (introductory undergraduate, etc.) suggested by
the sender and place it there. Users would be encouraged to send
students to the ICARE site rather than simply link materials so that
they would be exposed to the variety of approaches represented by our
group.
I am therefore making a general call for materials. Please send me
references, links, or materials that you think faculty may find useful
as supplementary or primary course materials. We must be sensitive to
copyright issues, but otherwise can be pretty open to what we post
(those managing pages for associations already undertaking similar
efforts, please let me know how you would like to be linked). Once we
get what I consider a critical mass, I will announce the site's
availability.
Thanks very much for you time and attention. I hope we can make this a
new function that will add not only to our visibility, but to the
benefits to membership in ICARE.
Sincerely,
John
