I believe in democracy. This means that I would defend the rights of =
Serbs, Kurds or Russians. I do not see Croatia as a country of angels, =
and if NATO cheered the cleansing of Serbs, I am indeed embarrased and =
regretful. As far as I know, Croatia has followed a policy based on =
nationalism which is not that different from the Serbian one. As I have =
tried to state before, I am against this kind of myth-driven and extreme =
nationalism.=20
In fact, some of my e-mails may have been misleading, because I have =
referred to the Serbs, when I in fact mean the Serbian government. =
Albert Camus once reminded us that we should never forget the =
individual. I will not. Should these Serbs have had there own state on =
"Croatian" territory. The question is hypothetical and on my own logic, =
I would have to say "yes".
That no one stopped the Croatians makes me feel ashamed.
However, does this justify the actions of the Serbian government against =
the Albanians in Kosovo?
In my opinion, it does not.
Also, I would like to say that when I made the remark about the Serbian =
history books, I was kind of annoyed at the tone in some of the =
responses. I was annoyed by a few claims that I thought was pretty much =
without substance (for instance: dismissing my arguments on the grounds =
of a complicated reality). Surely, this is no simple debate. It is in =
fact quite easy for me to argue that Croatians, Serbs, Muslims and =
Albanians all should be above their irrational national justifications =
for hating each other. When people are in a conflict, they probably lose =
"the big picture". Surely, the debate in the media during the last =
couple of years has made Milosevics into someone who cannot be trusted =
and someone who is as evil as Hitler (or Saddam Hussein). What he is =
doing, certainly reminds me of dictators, but we also have to realize =
that the West perhaps is idealizing itself. In the haste we forget about =
the Kurds in Turkey. We forget that Latvia discriminates Russians (but =
not in such an extreme way as the Kurds are in Turkey).
I do not see NATO as being without flaws. However, I do think that this =
time, the organization is doing the right thing. The actions of the =
Serbian government may not be worse than that of the Croatian =
government, but that does not justify the present actions.
Are Serbs evil? No, certainly not. However, their choice of leader has =
been poor. His intolerable actions have lead to the present situation.=20
I regret that the so-called free-world has not done anything against the =
killing of minorities in Croatia (or in any place ).

I was right when I said that my guiding principle is democracy. However, =
NATOs guiding principle may be realism. It is in fact possible for the =
alliance to win this war and to protect the Albanian because this is =
what is believed to be right in the member states.
Even though we are guided by different principles, we reach the same =
conclusion. Something has to be done to stop what was and what is going =
on in Kosovo. Unfortunately, this may mean that some Serbs will lose =
their lives. I do indeed regret this. If I did not, I would not have the =
right to call myself a human being.
