Monthly Reminder
Dear PKTers,
The purpose of this note is to remind you of some of the listserv
commands that you can use to customize your subscription to PKT, to
alert you to the PKT home page on the World Wide Web, and to remind you of the basic guidelines for using the PKT list.
PKT ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB
You can visit the PKT Web page by pointing your browser at
http://csf.colorado.edu/pkt/
Almost everything available through the PKT gopher can be accessed from
the PKT Web page. Additionally, the Web page provides access to the list
and seminar proceedings in hypertext format and links to other places on
the Internet that might be of interest to economists with PK
inclinations.
LISTSERV COMMANDS TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR SUBSCRIPTION
(The commands have been capitalized for emphasis, but are, in fact,
case-insensitive. PLEASE NOTE [very important]: these commands must be
sent to LISTSERV@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
If you are going to be away and want to postpone messages from PKT
send a message to LISTSERV@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and in the message type:
SET PKT MAIL POSTPONE <== postpones one's mail
SET PKT MAIL ACK <== unpostpone one's mail
To unsubscribe from PKT, please mail LISTSERV the message
UNSUB PKT <== two word command
Most common mistakes:
1. Punctuation marks near the two words E.g.,
"unsub pkt" rather than unsub pkt
>unsub pkt rather than unsub pkt
unsub pkt. rather than unsub pkt
unsub <pkt> rather than unsub pkt
2. Trying to unsubscribe from an (internet) .edu address when your
subscription is registered under a .bitnet address or when your address has changed only slightly. This must be done manually by the list owners.
Please write to
glanger@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
for assistance rather than taking your problem to the list. It is helpful to
forward a copy the of mail from listserv@csf that shows the
source of your problem.
If you would like to receive PKT messages in batches or digests
several times per week instead of message-by-message, send the
following command to LISTSERV@csf
If you want to return to message-by-message mail, use the command
SET PKT MAIL ACK
If you want to see an index of the logs of past messages and other files
that you can access via email send (to LISTSERV@csf) the command
INDEX PKT
The list of files returned from the index command are retrievable with
the get command. If, for example, you are interested in messages from
January 95, you send a message to LISTSERV@csf and in the body of the
message type
GET PKT JAN95
For friends who would like to subscribe, please have them send the
command
SUB PKT Firstname Lastname
REMEMBER: All of these commands should be sent to LISTSERV@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
THE BASIC GUIDELINES FOR USING PKT
The editors of PKT would like to suggest some basic guidelines for using
PKT. Given the size of pkt, and our awareness that most subscribers
receive more email than they can handle daily, we need to be sensitive to
the ways in which we use pkt to maximize everyone's benefit and minimize
email overload.
PURPOSE OF PKT: Post Keynesian Thought (PKT) is an electronic discussion
list for those interested in Post Keynesian economics and the historical,
social and political questions tha arise from Post Keynesian theory. PKT
is committed to dialogue that moves beyond traditional neoclassical theory
and exploring, from different points of view, the problems of income
distribution, pricing, production theory, growth theory, monetary stability,
natural resources, macrodynamics and economic philosophy. Thus, the range of
potential discussions and themes is quite large -- but not infinite.
This list is intended primarily for discussions of pedagogy, curriculum
development, syllabi, bibliographies, works in progress, and related
concerns.
GUIDELINES FOR USE:
This list is also intended to facilitate information sharing (conference
announcements, employment announcements, new publications etc.). However,
the following are considered inappropriate uses of PKT:
1) Use in lieu of direct email correspondence by subscribers who wish
to respond personally to one another. For example, if you wish to get
a copy of information announced by another subscriber, please do not
respond to the entire list; please, respond privately. A good rule of
thumb is: use pkt if a majority of all subscribers will benefit from your
response; write privately otherwise.
2) Using pkt for personal responses with the excuse that you don't know
a subscriber's email address. As the Monthly Reminder makes very clear,
email addresses of all subscribers are extremely easy to discover: simply
send the message REC PKT to: listproc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and you will be sent a message containing the names and addresses of all subscribers to the list.
3) Advertising or selling anything. If you wish to let others know about
relevent publications, please remove information about the cost of the
publication or any order forms. Feel free to include contact information
in your message, so that anyone interested in learning more or ordering
the publication may do so, but we cannot facilitate in any way the
advertising or purchasing of publications via pkt. There is a fundamental
difference between messages that inform others about publications and those
that sell publications. If you are in doubt, please feel free to get in
touch with us.
4) Using the list as a mass mailing list to conduct surveys or send out
mass mailings. If you are in doubt, please feel free to get in touch with
us.
5) Dominating the list by sending many more messages than the average
contributor (we're putting the average at 3 per day), or by sending
messages that approach dissertation-length. Shorter is better. Concise
is very nice.
(These are similar guidelines for other csf lists. We want to thank
Robin Crews for setting them up).
