Re: Krugman on Europe's future

Doug, you have it all over Krugman on intellectual grounds. This is
testimony to both his faults and your virtues. You are also one of our
finest writers. But in all honesty, I'd have to say that, as a writer
(not thinker) on economic topics, Krugman's in a class by himself. You
know, foolishly or otherwise I pride myself on my own writing skills,
but I have to face reality--I can't grab readers the way K can.

Of course, having a shallow and doctrinaire worldview makes it easier to
write in a breezy, zingy style. (No flames here, but I would put Lenin
in that category too.) As I think about it, none of my intellectual
heroes were particularly effective writers.

There, I feel better already.

By the way, Doug, what in God's name are you doing e-mail at 3:00 am?
(My excuse is I'm on Pacific coast time, and I'm not having fun because
I have too many student papers to read.)
