Re: Definition of money.

Longish post.
Actually, on the classics, Marx, Theories of Surplus Value, 3vol. provides
plentiful discussion through Mill. It is certainly not "Cliff Notes," but
should be read either alongside them or once in a lifetime for its not-too
critical comment on the strand of money thought running from Smith,
Thornton, [Bagehot, H. C. Emery, etc. late 19th], Keynes, and into our own
ranks.
The relvant cite though is Capital, Vol III, where in the famous
equation for the money supply, where its components are divided, financial
for real, for the interconnection.
::: "If we now consider the sum total of the money current during a given
period, we shall find that, given the rapidity of currency of the
circulating medium and of the means of payment, it is equal to the sum of
the prices to be realized, plus the sum of the payments falling due, minus
the payments that balance each other, minus finally the number of circuits
in which the same piece of coin serves in turn as means of circulation and
of payment. (Capital, Vol III 1968 p.139)
Thornton did not, and Marx did not in this passage, recognize the extent
promissory but non circulting monetary engagements were required to fill
gaps in the chain. At any given time, a certain number of these is
necessary, if only for weekly cash management under the burden of
obligations evolving over a longer period. Thus, the money supply is in
part, always, composed of transactions completed but not yet realized.
One use of the concept by Keynes was to see the evolution of these
necessarily mental uses of money as subject to convention. The money supply
as usually defined makes little use of these mental, verbal transactions and
so it is not equal to the actual physical or credit money used or called
into being in the actual transactions.
Yet, M1 has been found to be a good indicator of activity, more stable
than M4 say, at least in a basic model. What is going on? Just put both M4
and M1 in a more complex model, where the instabilities of financial
concentration can be identified and the two fulfill different functions. The
problems are lessened. Ultimately, the "simple" aggregate of financial
"characters" utilized to sum to liquidity, transactions, precautionary,
speculative, and financial, each carries its own or relatively specialized
types of money that are imperfect substitutes.
It is my opinion this is what Keynes was getting at by citing the
"complex of interest rates" in his drafts and previous to GT. This
disappeared in GT into the "rate" of interest and under the surface in Ch. .
It has been replaced subsequently by 'spreads,' risky to safe, and short to
long term. However, only in and around the specialized markets are the
particular characters of each money recognized. That this is bypassed in the
introductory course, or indeed any general macro course is unfortunate. Two
examples illustrate the historical range of this comment.
1. Remember the Susan B? I'll bet you dollars to quarters it affected
the hell out of the economy. I, and some of my cohorts used to demand it at
the bank. But that was the only place it could be got. It was missized, led
vendors to lose count. We used it anyway, in futile protest of the trump
card little sue represented to keynseian economics. The S.B. coin just
recieved (as a quarter) was dated 1979. At that time, pretty much the
womens' movement along with keynesianism constituted the thinking of the
entire liberal establishment. The coin was cloven to the womens' movement,
and every time one was protested, another keynesian vote was lost. I used to
do it anyway, just perhaps to fully register the magnitude of the defeat.
Finally one day I gave up, and instead of asking for my two rolls of Susan
B.s ($40), requested Eisenhowers. The supply in the bank was never more than
seven or eight at a time. When I gave those out Baby, what a commuction!
2. Consider the futures market. I am looking at the results of a simple
experiment. Two daily spreads, calculated as premia, London Nickel 3mo. over
cash and London Lead ditto. For 12/30/83 - 8/29/97, there is mutual Granger
causation at a lag of one day. Knowledge of the previous day's other price
would add to forecast
of today's. Still present at two days, at any longer period, the causation
vanishes. But there is cointegration indicated at longer lags. Would that
this were an argument that the average of the rates was in any way
representative. The time tracks of the two series over eighteen years show
one quiescent the other volatile and so on. The longer
frequency turbulence appears disparate. I cannot attach the graph. Two
graphs at shorter periods, 1/83-12/87, and 1/91-12/94 are attached. They may
be inserted as pictures into Word for viewing. The tracks of the two spreads
wander significantly, indicating a simple average would capture neither. The
particular circumstances of each instrument would be central to choice among
them. Yet, despite their disparate paths, when viewed statistically, the two

Any choice between them, would appear indifferent, given the medians and
standard deviations at the sample market. But take a shorter sample, viz.
