Since this thread is continuing to spawn, I'll explain what happened, even
though it's not PKT.

The owner of an AOL mailbox failed to check it in a timely manner, and its
allotted space on the server was used up  That meant that it could no
longer accept any further messages.  Attempts were made for a certain
period to deliver the messages, in case the owner of the mailbox had
cleared it out recently, and every failed attempt generated a message to
the originator of the message.  That's what we all got in our mailboxes.
