Economic vs Nuclear Destruction

A 1989 movie with Michael Douglas, titled "Black Rain," with exciting
action, made undoubtedly with expert economic advice, has the theme that
a powerful Mafia type Japanese figure intended to destroy the Unites
States in retaliation for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki holocausts.

His method was to have created perfect printing plates for our $100
bill, with which he intended to flood us with counterfeits. The serious
concern about this attempt seemed to be as great as if he intended to
plant nuclear bombs in our midst.

Does this make any more sense than the actual conviction held at the
start of WW2 that Germany could not possibly wage a war for more than
two weeks, because that was the value of all the gold that Germany
possessed?
