Well, it is certainly a cliche by now that Hollywood
is an intellectual sinkhole and has been for some
time, the situation only getting worse, rather than better.
However, my inquiry regarding Disney's "Hunchback of Notre
Dame" had more to it than mere jest.
I have read that contrary to all expectations, the
film has been very successful in France since its
release there, and that it has even received some favorable
comments in such outlets as _Liberation_. The reported
reasons are that a) the depiction of Notre Dame as a
refuge for minorities echoes a recent case where illegal
immigrants used a church as a sanctuary against arrest, and
b) a sense that it is getting harder to interest French
children in their own classics and that maybe even a (yuck)
Disney version is better than no version. C'est dommage,
si c'est vrai.
