This seems overly pessimistic to me. We've just finished wiping out
smallpox, and the first little space station is puttering along quite
nicely. That looks like both good housekeeping and a sensible bet on the
speculative future to me. Both have been done cooperatively, without hope
of monetary recompense, and entirely external to the methods that "hard
headed analysts" convince themselves are usual.
