Re: rough draft for changes at pkt

Ric proposes a solution for a non-problem. It just isn't clear why
"excessive" postings by a small number constitutes a crisis situation.
There is no sense in which the multiple postings of PD, BR, GR, JG and
others prevent others from posting. Apparently, some are concerned that
the personal costs of sifting through a large volume of posts is somehow
"too high." But, there are several very easy ways anyone can circumvent
such costs via screening rules or the delete key. There is no "tragedy
of the commons" here because excludability is fully possible.

Regarding Gomersall's post about the "newcomer problem" presumes that
it is they who are likely to be screened out. I don't recall anyone
saying that; certainly I didn't nor would I.

I thank John Gelles for coming to my defense against Galbraith's post. I
even would not argue for restricting in any way JG's remarks. Bill
Mitchell seems to have it about right: why screw around with something
that has worked reasonably well? The kinds of restrictions Ric proposes
run the risk ofcausing all kinds of other problems; once restrictions
start to be put into place, they have a way of multiplying.
