EU referendum in Norway - one week to go!
Today's (Monday) opinion polls are 51% (-3) - (Scan-Fact Co.),
57%(+3)-(MMI Co.) and 56.3%(+?) - (OPINION Co.) for NO, correspondingly
for YES. Number in parentheses are yesterday's corresponding polls.
The mean of those three polls is 54.7. This approx. level of EU
resistance has now been fairly stable for a week, in spite of extreme
media pressure for a YES vote. The probability of a NO victory is
increasing, but one cannot be sure....
On Saturday I went to Oslo and participated in what turned out to be
the biggest demonstration in Norway in this century. In spite of
ice-cold rain and drizzle, 25.000 people converged in separate
demonstration marches on the "Youngstorget" in central Oslo, which is a
large open place. Some 18.000 of the demonstrators had travelled from
all over Norway, distances of up to 350 miles by bus, train and car.
The main slogan for the demonstration was "YES to democracy, NO to the
European Union". After the full-packed meeting, ten thousand torches
were lit and we all marched on to the Storting (parliament), and the
demonstrators formed a ring around the building, symbolizing defence
for national sovereignity and our Constitution. Central Oslo was
dominated by singing, shouting EU resisters with torches. A beautiful
event and a memory for life! The demonstration was orderly and
peaceful, no confrontations, no trouble with the police.
in a good mood today,
Trond
