RE: Gintis on Summers
The debate on whether anybody can be in simultaneous agreement with Solow
and Sumner reminds me of an anecdote told about Luis Echeverria, former
president of Mexico. He, like presidents Turbay of Colombia and Guzman of
the Dominican Republic, had a well-earned reputation for an easy way with
words. Once, asked if he agreed with some important politician in the
country, Mr. Echavarria said: Yo no estoy de acuerdo ni en desacuerdo sino
todo lo contrario. Which loosely translated is something like: On the con-
trary, I neither agree nor disagree. I do hope that Mr. Gintis can
disentangle himself from this silly argument --that I say that I didn't
say what he says I said-- with grace and humour. He has too much to
contribute in a serious discussion to get bogged down with this.
