Georgescu-Roegen

I was notified of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen's death by Louis-Philippe
Rochon's message of yesterday. Does anyone know whether an obituary
or press release is available on the net somewhere ?

I have always had deep respect for the man and his work. Among
his many contributions, perhaps the most significant ones are the
following :

1) His effort to stress the importance of the entropy law for the
analysis of economic phenomena. _The Entropy Law and the Economic
Process_ is a magnificent book, and one that has been underestimated
by the profession.

2) His `discovery', together with Samuelson and Arrow, of the non-
substitution theorem in linear production models.

3) His introduction to the English translation of Gossen's _The Law
of Human Relations_.

I think he deserved the Nobel prize. I gather that he, like Joan
Robinson, never received it because of his critical attitude - if
ever he appeared on the hot list of the Nobel Committee. On the other
hand, I was pleased to see that his work, together with that of J.K.
Galbraith, A.O. Hirschman, and R.M. Goodwin, was treated favourably
in a section entitled `Four unconventional economists' in Ernesto
Screpanti & Stefano Zamagni's recent book _An Outline of the History
of Economic Thought_ (Oxford, Clarendon, 1993).
