Re: On Socialization

While i am willing to provisionally follow herb in claiming
that distinctions between humans and other animals are more
a matter of quantity than quality (but see Hegel and Marx, as
cited in the new woody allen film), i still reject genetic
preeminance over culture. What do you think of PRIMATE VISIONS
by Donna Haraway? I take it to refute sociobiology in two ways.
1) There are wide variations of behavior within genetically
similiar primates (as Robert Frank's work would lead us to
expect), which vary over time, place, kinship structure, etc
and 2) the behavior we attribute to animals reflects the view
of humans the researchers happen to hold (theory-ladenness of
observation). Haraway documents these arguments and presents
interpretative analysis. Are you familar with her work?
Do you see it as causing problems for your views of either
science or humanity?
In the spirit of discourse,
