Re: equilibrium

Dear Laurence Moss: What is meant ny "Thought experiments" (TEs)? Is the
thought experiment the "lazy" scientist's way of performing a laboratory
controlled experiment without bothering to actually perform the dirty work in
the lab?
Now I was originally trained (and taught) in graduate school as a Biochemist.
We were continually made aware of avoiding being "lazy" scientists in
the above sense. The
importance of actually going into the lab AND collecting your own data
AFTER properly designing the lab experiment so that you actually "controlled"
ALL(?) the independent variables among both the control and experimental
populations was indelibly imprinted into my psyche.
In biochemistry the design of the experiment was the "thought experiment"
It came prior to the actual lab work -- but it was essential for good science
