Free Trade, Fair Trade and Community Economic Development
Governments of many nations are embracing liberalized trade as a means of
eliminating poverty, reducing debt and promoting the type of development
envisioned by the Brundtland Commission. At the same time, economic,
social, political and technological changes occuring around the world are
alternating fundamental relationships between people and communities,
their governments and the environment. Traditional perspectives on local
and international development are being challenged by new realities. Can
free trade also be fair trade? What is the role of community-based
alternatives in a global economy dominated by large organizations and
institutions? Whose responsibility is it to care for human and
environmental well-being?
Alternatives special issue on trade, communities and development is
scheduled for Fall 1995. We welcome submissions addressing topics such as:
-the ideological basis and criteria for fair trade;
-free trade versus fair trade;
-the role and impacts of community-based economic initiatives;
-the experience and potential of alternative trading organizations;
-analyses of the roles of government, institutions and multinational
corporations (eg. World Bank, CIDA, Coca-cola, INCO...);
-trade liberalization, economic and social justice and sustainable
development in debt-burdened developing countries;
-globalized economies and human rights issues;
-Canada, Mexico and NAFTA;
-the role and importance of the international fair trade movement.
Alternatives is a refereed journal. Feature articles should be no more
