Environmental problems in the former
Soviet Union were *considerably*
worse than most of us might
imagine, at least as discussed in
_Ecocide in the USSR_ by
Feshbach and Friendly (Basic
1992). However, in many cases
it is apparent that the problem
was politics, not socialism, per
se. Here in Alaska, it is the
profit motive, pure and simple,
that is causing devastation...
