One problem with Eastern Europe and the xUSSR was that their "leaders"
decided that they wanted to imitate capitalism's drive to accumulate
-- and that with central planning, they could do it more and better!
Just as 50 years ago people in the US associated smoke with prosperity,
the bureaucratic-socialist leaders polluted more and better. (Sorry
about mangling grammar -- it allowed me to make a cute point.)
BTW, isn't the giant bell a simple result to deranged incentives?
i.e., the planners decided that the output of bells would be measured
in tons?
