Jim Devine & Adam Smith & L-Faire

Jim,
on A. Smith, I've always liked Viner's 1927 (April) article in the
JPE. One gem: "The modern advocate of laissez faire who objects to
government participation in business on the ground that it is an
encroachment upon a field reserved by nature for private enterprise
cannot find support for this argument in the Wealth of Nations.
In my History of Thought classes I always argue that Smith was a
premature Marxist to get them to read the Wealth more critically.
