Some insights into why (orthodox) economists are so attached to "stasis
and equilibrium" might be gained by examining Bruna Ingrao and Giorgio
Israel's _The Invisible Hand: Economic Equilibrium in the History of
Science_ (MIT Press, 1990).  I just finished it and found it very
enjoyable/helpful.  with your physics background, you should find this
very interesting and readable.  I have other suggestions but would be
curious about your perceptions of this work.
