That's an "urban myth."  Mozart always had a substantial income, along with substantial debts (like Lincoln he was afflicted with a spendthrift wife).  As a Mason (in the same lodge as Haydn) he could always count on the friendship of many rich bourgeois Viennois.  Why his grave is unmarked remains an absolute mystery--in bad weather, his funeral was nevertheless well attended.
