FWIW, there are also male prostitutes (and there always have been).
Some of gigolos, some provide gay sex, some are advertising
executives...

I don't know if working as a prostitute is qualitatively different
from working for wages doing other things or if it's just a matter of
degree.  But most people seem to think these types of jobs are quite
different, just as being raped differs significantly from being
mugged.
