[Pen-l] Benchmarks for Obama - Healthcare
Greetings Economists,
I noted Krugman's column in the NY Times wailing about the Healthcare
industry preparing a counter attack against Healthcare reform. I
think Obama's administration was an electoral response to the failures
over thirty years of the U.S. systemic approach to the problems
internally and externally of the global system. The model being the
reformist Roosevelt depression administration. However, Roosevelt's
administration had a left to contend with and our times don't have an
internal left organization. That aside in my view if Obama fails to
get healthcare even though the democrats are supposedly in control of
congress, then the reform character of the administration is dead.
Which leaves the original pressure for reform unchecked and increasing.
I would add that to me the current media campaign to say things are
past the worst is working for the public mood, but eventually the
pressures will push past that mood and awaken more desperate feelings
of a want for change. Coupled with external pressures against the
dollar and military adventures combine into a qualitative increase in
left influences on the national front.
I think it not quite the time to say the reformist candidate Obama has
failed, but Healthcare definitely is the benchmark that determines
success or failure of his administration. To paraphrase after that
the deluge.
thanks,
Doyle Saylor
