I don't know how scary that is. The fact is that this virtual space is just about all that's left of a social space -- an agora where we can all walk to midday, or in the evening, or whenever and exchange views, tell stories, waste time, etc. 

It feels more real than the real world because it is created by relatively free and uncoerced behavior. There's nothing to be gained, no profit to be made, nothing to prove, nobody to impress, etc. There's just a common desire for shared company, experience, and knowledge.

I'm rather saddened by the fact that the lists that interest me have almost no women on them; otherwise, in the absence of a corner cafe where I can go and jaw about the topic of the day, this will have to do.

I have learned about scholars, thinkers, books, etc., I did not know existed, and I have met many people -- like you, Michael, Doug, Ravi, etc. - whom I would not have met in a million years without such a list.

So, all in all, I'm not complaining too much.
