You weren't, ad your post made the most sese. But here is my argumet: If
you worry about that part of the populationn that believes such silly
positions, then you are going to be wasting your time. They don't hold
an academic position (which is how this topic is being discussed) but a
visceral response that 'places' them in the opposition. They can change,
under vastly different social conditions (such as existed in the '60s
for example), but you can't argue them out of their position. 

Secondly, you don't need to. If you aren't trying to mobilize (either as
a mass movement or as voters) 300 million, then you have to be
practical: focus your energies where it can make a difference. And where
it can (possibly though, at the present time, probably not) - where it
can make a difference is if you focus on those 10s of millions who hold
generally compassionate views but don't believe they can do anything
about it. That is energize those who already see the need for welfare
and for free education paid for by the state (which means that students
are paid a salary rather than charged tuition).
