This morning I read some of Daniel Geary's new book on C. Wright Mills
to prepare for an interview with him, which I just recorded. One of
Mills's early jobs was working for Paul Lazarsfeld studying the
process of opinion formation in Decatur, Illinois. Basically, the
model they developed - though Mills split with his boss over
Lazarsfeld's lack of interest in structures of power - was that the
media influenced public opinion via "thought leaders" in a community.
Mills thought the labor movement should learn from this in its
propagandizing.
Carrol is always big on the role of personal influence on political
thought and action, which is true, but there are ways to influence the
process, contrary to his fatalism about everything.
