Even though it does not directly address the concern of why
"unproductive" people should get welfare, I do like pointing the
finger upward and saying "They get far more welfare than those at the
bottom". E.g., Dean Baker's book The Conservative Nanny State. I mean,
when you start looking at how the federal budget is a big giveaway to
the wealthy in many respects, when you look at the tax code that allows
them to start on third base (and other advantages that are not considered
"welfare"), etc., when you add it all up, it's a huge giveaway.
And today, with the banking bailout, you've got a pretty good example.
