All modern states are "welfare" states - they are concerned with the
welfare/wellbeing of their citizens. As I tell my students, if you attend
state University you are collecting "welfare" (which really disturbs the
republican/conservative engineers who make up the majority of students at
Michigan Tech.) It is just a matter of degrees. I have no problem paying
higher taxes if I got something in return instead of stupid wars, a bloated
civil service and elected representatives who live of the fat of the land.
