Twitter may seem silly because so much of the press around it is
regarding the silly people who "tweet", such as Ashton Kutcher. It
does seem to be one of these technologies that is a solution
in search of a problem.
I found a good use for it: my friends have a softball team in our city
co-ed recreational league, and I am its captain. In the event of a
game cancellation, we used to do a phone chain; then we evolved to a
combination of email/phone chain/txt messaging. This year I asked
everyone to follow a twitter feed for our team, which would be where I
send cancellation notices.
The elegance of the solution is that twitter pushes the decision about
the medium for the information exchange to the periphary at the user;
I can notify the team of a cancellation rather effortlessly by sending
a txt message or posting the info to a web page. Our team members can
receive in whatever way they prefer: txt message, checking a web page,
or adding the feed to their RSS capable client, such as Microsoft
Outlook.
