Re: [Pen-l] best paragraph of the day.

Michael Perelman cited:

110: "If a period of growth is followed by a period of depression, there
are two possibilities: either the ruling group will modify its attitudes
and behavior, or it will be replaced by another group. The classic
formulation of the will be replaced by another group. The classic
formulation of the aristocrat, Tancredi, tells an older-generation
aristocrat, Fabrizio, 'we have to change everything in order to keep
everything as it is'."

Elites (London: Temple Smith).

Think you meant to transcribe it as follows:

"If a period of growth is followed by a period of depression, there are two
possibilities: either the ruling group will modify its attitudes and
behavior, or it will be replaced by another group. The classic formulation
of the aristocrat, Tancredi, tells an older-generation aristocrat, Fabrizio,
'we have to change everything in order to keep everything as it is'."

And Tancredi on further reflection probably would have expressed the
sentiment more accurately thus: "We have to change SOME things in order to
keep everything as it is"...
