I always wanted to have my own university.  I would surround it with barbed wire & guards with signs reading “No one under 25 allowed.”  Young people would want to attend my school.

 

I would have a high admission fee, but send out diplomas with acceptances.

 

We used to have a drinking festival in Chico.  The town & school shut it down.  The festivities moved to St. Patrick’s day.  The school moved Spring break to include St. Patrick’s day to keep the students away at the time.

 

During the Drinking Festival, known as Pioneer Days – which helped Chico to earn its spot as the country’s No. 1 party school, I would get a very small group of students in my classes.  It was a wonderful experience.  Everyone there was interested in learning & not afraid to show it.   The rest of the year, classes are largely a form of advanced day care, even though many of the students are great people & I can get through to some of them.   It is that the university environment is deadening, compared to what it might be.
