At one time during the cold war when I was a student activist (second year) in the disarmament movement, I was held by my neck, put up against a wall by a huge and muscular plain clothed policeman and asked: are you a fag or are you communist?

That is the closest first hand experience/trauma in which I came to being asked are you a socialist/communist.
