How, then, would you summarize your political perspective, ravi?

Humanist, perhaps? (a strange term to use to bring my signature issue of
animal welfare into leftist consideration! ;-)). Perhaps "religious atheist
leftist"?

religious atheist? you mean that you BELIEVE that there are no supernatural powers that guide our lives?

;-) I believe that religious codes are the result of a sort of empirical moral science which have significant validity. Most people grew up with religion (me to a lesser extent since my father was an atheist) and upon attaining Enlightenment (capital E, as in European Enlightenment) choose to sacrifice their religion in order to keep their god. I think the opposite is the way to go. I have given up on god (hence atheist) but decided to keep religion i.e., the idea of a moral science. ;-)

why not call yourself a "socialist" instead of a "leftist"?

Because "leftist" seems to me a more universal term... whereas "socialist" seems strongly tied to Western leftism. My variety of socialism is Gandhian socialism. So you can call me a Gandhian Socialist then!
